Sermorelin for women: benefits, risks and evidence
Research in women is thin. Here is what one small trial found, who should avoid sermorelin, and which claims go beyond the evidence.
.md Read this page as Markdown (for AI assistants)The short answer
Women can be prescribed sermorelin when a provider decides it is appropriate, but research in women is limited to two small studies, neither using sermorelin itself. Growth hormone and IGF-1 rose in one, and skin thickness increased, while body weight and muscle did not change. In the other, a different GHRH molecule reduced visceral fat, with no control group. It should not be used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and compounded sermorelin is not FDA-approved.
Why a provider review matters for women
Your hormones are part of the picture
Tell your provider about any hormone therapy, menopause symptoms or plans for pregnancy.
Honest expectations
You can discuss which goals have some evidence and which do not before you spend money.
Care from home
An online visit, a licensed US provider, and delivery to your door.

Start your sermorelin visitWhat the trial found in women
The 1997 Khorram trial gave a GHRH analog for 16 weeks to 10 women and 9 men aged 55 to 71. The results differed by sex:
| Measure | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| GH and IGF-1 | Increased | Increased |
| Skin thickness | Increased | Increased |
| Lean body mass | No increase | Increased |
| Insulin sensitivity | No increase | Increased |
| General well-being and libido | No improvement | Improved |
| Body weight | Unchanged | Unchanged |
| Sleep quality | Unchanged | Unchanged |
That is a very small group, in one age range, decades ago. It cannot tell you what to expect at a younger age or on a compounded product.
The study in postmenopausal women
In a 2005 study, 10 postmenopausal women took GHRH-1,44, the full-length molecule rather than sermorelin's 29-amino-acid fragment, for 3 months. Overnight GH rose about 98% and IGF-1 about 71%. Visceral fat fell 16%, and walking and stair-climbing times improved. Most participants (70%) had skin reactions at the injection site. There was no placebo group, so these results compare women with their own starting point, and they cannot simply be applied to sermorelin.
Who should not take it
The Geref label lists pregnancy and lactation as contraindications. Astra's sermorelin page also says it is not recommended if you have active cancer or certain pituitary conditions. See is sermorelin safe? for the full list, and tell your provider about any hormone treatment you use.
Claims that go beyond the evidence
- Menopause and anti-aging. A review of growth hormone, menopause and ageing found no definite evidence of rejuvenation with GH.
- Belly fat and weight loss. Body weight did not change in the 1997 trial. The 2005 study above is not a sermorelin trial and had no control group. See sermorelin and weight loss.
- Better sleep. Sleep quality did not change in this trial. See sermorelin and sleep.
Common questions
Does sermorelin work for women?
A related analog raised GH and IGF-1 in a small trial. Most other benefits measured in that trial were seen only in men, or not at all.
Will sermorelin help with belly fat?
We did not find a trial of sermorelin itself showing this. One uncontrolled study of a different GHRH molecule reported 16% less visceral fat in 10 postmenopausal women. See sermorelin and weight loss.
What is the best peptide for women?
No evidence-based ranking exists. The better question is whether a treatment has been studied for your goal and suits your health history, which a licensed provider can assess.
Can I take sermorelin while trying to get pregnant?
Talk to your provider first. The Geref label rules out use during pregnancy.
Safety at a glance
Reported side effects include flushing, injection site pain or irritation and mild headache. Sermorelin is not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding, active cancer or certain pituitary conditions, and long-term safety in adults has not been established. It is prohibited in tested sports.
